O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She advanced into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled with her performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the jury. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. The judges were stunned by this and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performances were consistently good, that he did not fall into the top 3. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
